Common Uses & Applications of Aluminized Steel

While the expression “best of both worlds” rarely applies to metal alloys, one exception might be aluminized steel. This high-performance alloy combines the strength of carbon steel with the temperature- and corrosion- resistance of aluminum.

Alliance Steel has you covered if you want aluminized steel's competitive advantage. We’re a leading flat-rolled steel supplier capable of delivering this product under the conditions you require, whenever and wherever you need it.

Our team takes pride in providing steel sheets and coils at competitive prices. Discussing material types in the marketplace and their characteristics helps you make sound decisions. In this blog post, we’re diving deep into aluminized steel.

Aluminized Steel Explained

Aluminized steel is manufactured by mixing iron with aluminum. This process involves dipping a clean carbon steel workpiece into a vat of either pure molten aluminum or molten aluminum and silicon three times. This is done before drying by air.

This technique causes the carbon steel substrate and aluminum coating to form a tight metallurgical bond. The result is a finished product that exhibits the most effective characteristics of both materials.

High-temperature resistance

The aluminum coating enables Aluminized Steel to withstand operating environments up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit. For comparison, galvanized steel can handle temperatures up to 392 degrees Fahrenheit.

Low thermal expansion coefficient

With a low thermal expansion coefficient, Aluminized Steel is less likely to deform from heat than other alloys unlike stainless steel.

Superior Corrosion Resistance

The sacrificial oxide layer that forms during the hot-dipping process enables Aluminized Steel to withstand corrosive environments. The oxide layer heals when scratched, making the material highly suitable for harsh conditions.

Good Formability

Aluminized Steel is easy to roll, bend, form, and corrugate. As a result, it’s suitable for any project where additional fabrication is required.

Striking Appearance

A naturally smooth, shiny surface finish makes Aluminized Steel suitable for applications where appearance and feel are essential.

Non-Leaching

Aluminized Steel will not impact surfaces' color, texture, or taste.

Aluminized Steel Uses

Aluminized steel is useful where extreme heat and corrosion are common. Examples include components for incinerators, ovens, heaters, kitchen ranges, and barbecue burners.

The ability to withstand degradation makes aluminized steel great for HVAC components or industrial piping that carries corrosive process media. What’s more, its non-leaching properties mean the material won’t affect food flavor. It’s widely used in cookware.
