Manufacturing Engineer Internship

Date: May-August 2024

Reports to: VP of Engineering and Continuous Improvement

Position Purpose:

The Manufacturing Engineer Internship at Alliance Fabrication and Manufacturing offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of manufacturing, engineering, and fabrication. In this 10-week internship (May until August), you will be immersed in our internal operations, working four days a week for ten-hour shifts. This internship will provide valuable exposure to the manufacturing industry and the opportunity to contribute to crucial engineering projects.

A Day in the Life:

Assist in key engineering projects, supporting the various stages from concept to completion.

Troubleshoot equipment issues and provide comprehensive solution proposals, including tool design, vendor coordination, process changes, and equipment procurement and installation.

Utilize 3D modeling software to create detailed models and prototypes.

Analyze existing manufacturing processes to identify areas for improvement in efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

Assist in quality control measures by monitoring production processes, conducting inspections, and implementing quality assurance protocols to ensure that products meet industry standards and customer requirements.

Participate in production planning and scheduling activities, including resource allocation, material procurement, and inventory management. You may also help optimize production schedules to minimize downtime and meet production targets.

Learn to operate and program fabrication manufacturing equipment (i.e., robotic welders, fiber lasers, CNC press brakes), troubleshoot technical issues, diagnose equipment malfunctions, and implement corrective measures.

Support initiatives related to lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies, such as Six Sigma.

Adhere to health, safety, and environmental regulations in the manufacturing environment.

Create and update documentation, such as standard operating procedures, work instructions, and process manuals, to ensure consistency and compliance with regulatory requirements.

0-2 years of experience using software such as Solidworks, Crelo, or other modeling software, as well as spreadsheets and word processing applications or the equivalent in specialized software.

Plant Manager 

Job Description:

 Alliance Steel is a growing full-service steel processing company, diversifying into steel tubing production and manufacturing. We are seeking a Plant Manager for our Gary, IN, location to oversee our new tube-making equipment.  The Plant Manager will be responsible for managing a greenfield tube operation's start-up and overseeing the daily operational activities. The position will also have responsibility in our manufacturing area.

Start-up Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the installation of the direct form mill and establish SOPs based on manufacturer training.
  • Assist in the creation of production protocols and train employees in best practices.
  • Implement qualitative procedures so products can be tested and documented during production.
  • Establish preventative maintenance procedures in accordance with equipment manufacturers' guidance.
  • Create a critical parts list and consumable KanBan quantities to optimize mill uptime.

Ongoing Duties:

  • Lead, manage, and report daily production and quality requirements. Assist operators and employees in troubleshooting as necessary. Coach and mentor team members on properly operating equipment, tooling, and quality requirements. A strong understanding of customer requirements will be developed so quality decisions can be made to prevent rejections and claims.
  • Train and cross-train team members continuously to ensure skill levels are proficient and equalized within their respective positions. Meet expectation deadlines of training timelines.
  • Perform safety training, audits, and daily coaching so our team is safe and accident-free.
  • Manage a safe and efficient flow of all material produced so labor allocation and usage align with productivity goals, including evaluating right-sizing teams each shift. Address and correct productivity delays so they are not a repeat issue.  Minimize gap and downtime and maximize uptime time.
  • Lead daily housekeeping activities and allocate labor equally and appropriately to ensure continuing improvement towards a world-class appearance and maintain daily desired state.
  • Assist as needed and coordinate the repair and maintenance of equipment as required.
  • Ensure consistent timeliness of loading and unloading to avoid delays in inbound material removal and outbound shipments by the team. Included will be the correct shipment to our customers at all times by the training team to perform cross-checks and follow instructions on the material loaded.
  • Set employee schedules, complete required production through the enterprise software, and review daily attendance punches for accuracy. Foresee and address overtime causes.  Approve or assist in weekly approval of hours.
  • Learn and lead improvement on required business management/production metrics as a requirement of the position. Additionally, train team members so they understand their responsibilities to the metrics.  E., mill run rate, loading efficiencies, on-time delivery, etc.  Employees should understand huddle board information and how to interpret it.
  • Ensure customer specifications are being met on all produced, inbound, and outgoing products as a result of auditing, training, and coaching throughout each shift. This will include correct packaging, labeling, dimensional tolerances, defect-free products, etc
  • Work as a leader, team member, resource, and/or coach and maintain required Lean and Visual Factory areas, including 5S, KanBan, daily task boards, housekeeping matrices, pull systems, shipping lanes, staging, etc. Continuous improvement project participation is required.

Supervisor Requirements:

  • As directed by the Operations Manager. Manage and oversee assigned personnel.  Make leadership decisions in accordance with the organization’s policies, handbook, and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include the training of employees and the planning, assigning, and directing of their work.  This also includes appraising the employees’ performance, rewarding them, addressing complaints, and resolving issues.

Mill Operator - Alliance Tubular Products

 

Job Description Summary

Alliance Steel is a growing full-service steel processing company, diversifying into steel tubing production. We are seeking a first-shift Mill Operator for our Gary, IN location to oversee our new tube-making equipment. The Mill Operator will manage the daily production and oversee the quality and tracking of daily output.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Adherence to Alliance Steel’s company rules, safety policies, and housekeeping regulations.
  • Understanding of and adherence to Alliance Steel’s mission statement, values, and quality guidelines.
  • Ability to follow and execute the production schedule.
  • Follow qualitative procedures so the product can be tested and documented during production.
  • Coordinate with and direct all other tube mill department associates as it relates to the review and sequencing of work orders to be produced.

 

Operating Duties:

  • Operate tube mill drives, high-frequency welder, and mill ancillary systems (coolants, lubricants, OD scarfing, etc.) to ensure optimal performance and run speeds. Exceptions to this may include required adjustments for safety, quality, or operating issues necessitating stoppage or slowing of the process for resolution.
  • Choose and install the correct, consumable supplies, such as impeders and high-frequency work coils, then locate them in their correct positions to maximize HF welder efficiency. Perform safety training, audits, and daily coaching so our team is safe and accident-free.
  • Monitor the tube-making process – balancing motors, ensuring HF welder operates at maximum efficiency; mill coolants are on and at correct incoming temperatures; lubricating systems are on and operating at correct flow rates.
  • Determine the correct OD scarfing tools to remove the weld bead properly.
  • Lead daily housekeeping activities and allocate team members equally and appropriately to ensure continuing improvement towards a world-class appearance and maintain the daily desired state.
  • Initiate and lead mill sizing changes. Adjust tooling according to qualitative requirements.
  • Forward-looking, set up, and operating line inspection devices such as weld alignment, Eddy Current testing, and inkjet (stenciling) equipment.

 

Supervisor Requirements:

  • As directed by the Plant Manager, manage and oversee assigned personnel. Make decisions in accordance with the organization’s policies, handbook, and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include the training of employees and the planning, assigning, and directing of their work.  This also includes appraising the employees’ performance, rewarding them, addressing complaints, and resolving issues.

Robotic Welder Operator

Job Description:

Alliance Fabricating and Manufacturing LLC, a fast-paced, growing metal fabrication company, is looking to hire skilled robot operators for the first and second shifts. Robotic Welder Operators prepare and load parts to cycle through a robotic welder. Additionally, they will perform some hand welding and grinding of parts. A Robotic Welder Operator must be a dependable self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision. Must be a safety-conscious worker.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote Safety as the Number 1 priority of all employees.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, planning sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine tooling requirements, setup procedures, welding methods, and sequences. An overhead crane can mount, align, and secure tooling, attachments, and workpiece on machines.
  • Operate both manual welder and robotic welding machines to weld standardized parts where the operation is repetitive.
  • Prepare and position fixtures before welding and preassemble small mechanical units or components with limited parts before placing them on the welding machine.
  • Inspect work visually during the operation for visual weld defects.
  • Perform first piece inspection/and or inspection of parts to ensure parts are produced per specification or print; obtain sign-off by Quality Control personnel.
  • Report labor hours by entering the information correctly in the terminal.
  • Perform proper maintenance and cleaning of the equipment.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have high school / GED.
  • Must demonstrate high critical thinking, eye/hand coordination, and manual dexterity; possess a mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to read blueprints and assembly drawings.
  • Must be able to read/write and understand verbal and written work instructions, work orders, and customer specifications.
  • Basic math and measurement skills (addition, subtraction, decimal, and fraction conversions); accurately read a tape measure, caliper, and height gauge.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Three months previous robot welding or combined education and experience.
  • AWS certification is a plus.
  • Experience operating Fanuc welding robots is preferred but not required.

Maintenance Mechanic

Job Description:

Our Gary, IN, steel processing plant is looking for a Maintenance Mechanic to support the Maintenance Department. The individual will be responsible for maintaining mechanical equipment and systems to provide dependable support to plant operations accurately and efficiently while observing safety policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance throughout the plant
  • Perform equipment repairs
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems
  • Perform equipment inspections
  • Perform additional duties as needed

Experience and Requirements:

  • Field experience in either operations and/or manufacturing environment strongly preferred
  • Ability to utilize precision measurement instruments
  • Experience in various welding processes and oxyfuel cutting for fabrication and repair
  • Basic understanding of hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Basic computer skills preferred
  • Experience in overhead crane maintenance preferred
  • Ability to troubleshoot, rebuild and repair hydro boxes, using a straight edge and indicators
  • Ability to determine grades and sizes of bolts, pipes, tubing, cables, and wires
  • Experience in bearing installation, care, and lubrication

  • Must have high school / GED.

  • Realizar operaciones de empaque con precisión de 100%

  • Flexibilidad de trabajar horas extras y fines de semana cuando sea necesario.
  • Hacer tarimas para productos con medidas específicos usando cinta de medir, sierras, pistola de clavos y grapadoras. (Bombillas de acero).
  • También será responsable de traer tarimas a las líneas de producción.

Resumen: Estamos en busca de operador de maquina laser para trabajar en lo siguiente:

  • Preparar los ajustes de configuración del equipo de producción y ayudar con los cambios de equipo.
  • Mantener los estándares de calidad y las especificaciones del cliente mediante la realización de inspecciones de la primera pieza y del proceso; completar papeleo de control de producción; analizar los cambios hechos y hacer cambios o ajustes al equipo como sea necesario.
  • Ayudar a capacitar/ entrenar a otros para las responsabilidades de producción demostrando los procedimientos operativos.
  • Mantener el funcionamiento de las maquinas resolviendo problemas del proceso de producción; realizar ajustes de equipos reportando producciones y datos de calidad; informar las decisiones tomadas; remitir preguntas al supervisor.
  • Mantener las operaciones de producción siguiendo las políticas y procedimientos (Equipo, materias primas y en producto en proceso, y producto terminados) informando los cambios necesarios.
  • Asegurarse de la operación de las políticas y procedimientos del equipo informando cambios y reparaciones necesarios.

  • Realizar funciones de corte longitudinal de acuerdo con las instrucciones de trabajo escritas y la orden de producción.
  • Que cumpla con los cronogramas de producción y los requisitos del cliente estableciendo y manteniendo buenas comunicaciones con miembros del equipo.
  • Medir el metal/acero para cumplir con las especificaciones del cliente.
  • Debe ser capaz de identificar productos conformes / no-conformes.
  • Seguir protocolos de seguridad.
