Hot Rolled Steel vs. Cold Rolled Steel

Hot rolled steel is processed at high temperatures and is the preferred choice for structural and industrial applications where tight dimensional tolerances are not required. Cold rolled steel undergoes additional processing at room temperature for tighter tolerances, smoother surface finish, and higher strength.

ASTM A1011 Hot Rolled Steel

ASTM A1011 is the standard specification for hot-rolled carbon, structural, HSLA, and ultra-high-strength steel sheet and coil. Well-suited for forming and welding applications, A1011 is an excellent choice where minor surface variation is acceptable. Heat treatment can affect mechanical properties.

ASTM A1018 Hot Rolled Steel

ASTM A1018 is the standard specification for heavy gauge hot-rolled sheet in Carbon (CS), Structural (SS), High-Strength Low-Alloy (HSLAS), HSLA with improved formability (HSLAS-F), and Ultra-High Strength (UHSS) grades in thicknesses over 0.230 inches. Well-suited for forming and welding where minor surface variation is acceptable. Heat treatment can affect mechanical properties.

ASTM A36 Hot Rolled Steel

A36 is one of the most widely used hot rolled carbon steel grades for structural applications. A36 coil and sheet cover low-carbon steels used in construction, manufacturing, and general fabrication. Its lower carbon content makes it easy to form, machine, and weld. Heat treatment has a minimal effect on A36 mechanical properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

The key difference is thickness. ASTM A1011 covers hot-rolled sheet and strip in thicknesses up to 0.230 inches. ASTM A1018 covers the same grade families, including Commercial Steel, Structural Steel, HSLA, and UHSS, but applies to heavier gauge material in thicknesses over 0.230 inches.
If your specification calls for material heavier than 0.230 inches, you need A1018. For thinner gauge coil and sheet, A1011 applies. Alliance Steel stocks both specifications across multiple grade designations.
If the part will be painted, powder coated, welded, or processed on a laser, order HRPO. The pickling process removes mill scale so the surface is clean and consistent, which improves paint adhesion, reduces weld contamination, and produces cleaner laser cuts.
Standard hot rolled mill finish is the more economical choice for parts that will be sandblasted, galvanized, or used in unexposed structural applications where surface condition is not a factor. Alliance Steel offers both pickled and oiled and pickled dry options in A1011, A1018, and A36 grades.
The primary difference is in how each specification is ordered and what it guarantees. A1011 covers a range of designations including Commercial Steel (CS), Drawing Steel (DS), Structural Steel (SS), HSLA, and UHSS. CS and DS grades are ordered to chemistry requirements only, without guaranteed mechanical property minimums, making them well suited for forming, stamping, and general fabrication.
A36 is a structural grade with guaranteed minimum mechanical properties including a 36 ksi yield strength, and is the standard specification for load-bearing structural applications, construction, and fabrication where certified strength values are required by design or code.
