What is Hot Rolled Pickled & Oiled Steel?

Why Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled Steel?

  • The combination of workability, surface finish/corrosion resistance, better painting, improved welding, improved fabrication(bending, forming stamping, laser cutting) are some of the main advantages that hot rolled pickled and oiled (HRPO) steel has to offer.
  • To aid in corrosion resistance, Hot Rolled steel is first pickled to remove scale and impurities from its surface, and lastly, the newly pickled steel is oiled to prevent rust and oxidation.
  • The end effect is a smoother surface that enhances the material's formability and weldability, making it ideal for use in the manufacturing of machinery, automobiles, and buildings. The Pickling and Oiling Procedure

Pickling is used to clean hot rolled steel by removing impurities like rust, scale, and surface discoloration.

The steel is immersed in a solution typically composed of strong mineral acids such as sulfuric or hydrochloric acid to dissolve surface oxides and contaminants.

In addition to cleaning the steel, the pickling process enhances the steel's surface quality, making it more suitable for use in future manufacturing procedures. 

Following pickling, a thin layer of oil is applied to the steel surface to prevent corrosion.

This oiling process forms a protective barrier that shields the material from moisture and other environmental elements.

Challenges with Blasting

During the blasting process, abrasive particles are propelled against the steel’s surface, producing a number of tiny holes or craters. A laser’s ability to focus during cutting may be negatively impacted by this uneven surface texture, resulting in a lower-quality cut. Furthermore, blasting frequently produces an uneven texture that results in a duller paint finish, which might not satisfy the practical and aesthetic requirements of high-quality construction.

Pickling hot rolled steel, on the other hand, efficiently eliminates flaky scale, leaving the entire sheet or coil with a uniformly smooth surface. 

It is ideal for painting and enamel applications due to its consistency, which is crucial for achieving a high-quality finish. 

Pickled Steel products have a clean, flat surface, which also makes other fabrication procedures easier. For example, welding HRPO (Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled) steel is safer and more effective, as fewer surface impurities may compromise weld integrity. The smooth surface also enhances metal forming and bending operations by reducing tool wear and enabling more precise, consistent results.

ASTM A1011 Hot Rolled Pickled Steel

ASTM 1011 is the standard specification for Sheet, Hot Rolled, Carbon, Structural, High-Strength Low-Alloy, High-Strength Low-Alloy with improved formability, and ultra-high-strength steel. It is ideal when some surface imperfections are not an issue and is ideal for forming and welding. Heat treatment can affect the properties of the steel.
