A tensile test measures the force required to break a material’s sample specimen and the extent to which the specimen stretches or elongates to that breaking point. The test is commonly used to find a material’s ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation.
Ultimate tensile strength is the maximum stress material can sustain prior to fracture, while elongation measures the test piece’s gauge length increase after fracture. Yield strength is the amount of stress applied when deformation begins.
